Palm Oil Free
Products must be free from palm oil and palm derivatives.
As an ingredient found in around 50% of products on supermarket shelves, palm oil has developed a negative reputation due to the unsustainable way it’s being produced. To make way for palm oil plantations, huge areas of rainforest are destroyed which has implications on climate change, biodiversity and indigenous people. The palm oil industry has also long been associated with exploitative labour practices. Because of these issues there is a growing demand for more sustainable alternatives.
The Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was established in 2004 with the key mandate to “promote the production of sustainable oil palm through credible and enforceable standards” yet past violations by RSPO members suggest there is still a way to go in ensuring our planet is prioritised over profit.
For this reason, we don’t believe RSPO approved palm oil is a truly sustainable product, so Shop Small Collective only partners with brands that are palm oil free.
